RTO/ERO Members Contributing to the Community
Mayor Bradley's 2001 Honour List

Carol Beaven

Don Cook Murray Squire Wanda Zwering
For several years Beaven has been the organiza- tional force behind the Sarnia cineSERIES, promoting Canadian talent and providing Sarnians with an opportunity to see important national and international films that otherwise would not be shown here.
Through her devotion to film and under her direc- tion, the Sarnia group has grown to be one of the largest cineSERIES on the film circuit, a division of the Toronto International Film Festival, putting it ahead of about 41 similar groups in Ontario.
As a retired Sarnia secondary school student councellor, Beaven felt it was important to engage local students in film- making and film appreciation. She recently introduced a scholarship for local students inter- ested in pursuing film or theatre studies.

As an active member of the Sarnia-Lambton chapter of Pensioners Concerned for 23 of its 28 years, Squire made a major contribution. Unfortunately, the group is disbanding this year. It has been part of a nation- al network of groups that keeps the government informed about the needs of older adults. Local newsletters kept members updated and the weekly meetings provided a regular social outing for many.
Squire served as presi- dent of the chapter for 18 years. In 1989, he received the Ontario Senior Achievement Award; in 1993 the Confederation Medal; and in 1999 the International Year of the Older Person Award. In 2001, Squire assisted in the formation of an annual scholarship at Lambton College in gerontology funded by the local chapter of Canadian Pensioners Concerned. He's also been active Sarnia Horticultural Society, the Elder Abuse Committee, the Lambton Seniors Association and the Lambton District Health Council.
Zwering, a retired teacher/ librarian with the Lambton County Board of Education, has been a valuable volunteer at St. Theresa's School, dedicating time to assist young at-risk readers to develop reading skills. Her enthusiasm for reading and love of children hsvr shd s positive influence and the students at St. Theresa's call her Grandma Wanda.
For the past several years, she has also been on the board for the Organization for Literacy in Lambton. As well, Zwering is an active member in her church choir and a member of the rainbow Singers who entertain at the Dow People Place and other venues. She helps fundraise fro the Family Counselling Centre and was named a Volunteer of the Year in 2001 by the United Nations.
Zwering has been described as an eager volunteer who demonstrates a wonderful dedication to her community.
